Are you currently having a hard time getting a lot of traction in your business? You want to take action and get things going but perhaps there’s a heaviness, a resistance you can’t quite put your finger on? Or perhaps there’s a sense of stalling, of procrastinating or overall feeling of heaviness. If this is the case, it could be something you wouldn’t expect. After being in business for a lot of years, I’ve seen that it’s not all roses. Our business is a huge catalyst to our personal growth and often our lessons are learned the hard way.
For a moment I invite you to look back over the course of your business, or even just the last 12 months...
If you’re like typical business owners, the answer is yes.
I invite you to imagine for a moment the feelings you felt in the various situations that were frustrating, challenging or just plain old didn’t feel good. Imagine those feelings, left sitting there became clouds around you and in your business.
Clouds of emotional energy, blocking the light and making everything feel more dreary than it actually feels underneath the fog.
This is what it's like when we don't regularly clear the cobwebs, the fog of past situations we still have some emotions around.
If we don’t have a way of venting or processing the experiences, big or small, that felt bad, they tend to accumulate and cloud our current reality.
Perhaps you took a risk and tried something new, and it “failed.” Perhaps you shared the idea you had for your business with a friend or loved one and they didn’t get it. Perhaps you had a non-ideal client who drained your energy and had you question your value.
The list of things that can happen in business that feel bad is endless.
Which is why it’s a good idea to take some time to clear the cobwebs, open up the windows and let the light in. I’ve got a process to help you do just that.
I’m always amazed at the space that opens up every time I do this simple process. And the good feelings that begin to show up, the creativity and new ideas that could not be accessed in a cloud of the old feelings.
Are you game? Awesome. A couple things first before you get started:
This is a powerful process to complete, ideally while you’re alone or with your business partner if you have one. Please carve out some sacred time to do this. It may take 10 minutes or more, if you have a big backlog it may take setting aside several time blocks. Either way, remove all distractions and tell everyone around you not to bother you for the next 20 minutes.
Grab some paper that’s easy to destroy (thick or shiny paper is not a good idea)
We are going to be doing a “venting” process, writing down the past experiences that felt bad. If you’re worried focusing on these experiences will cause you to attract more, know that the intention is to vent and release, not to ruminate and stew about it. To get these emotional situations out of your mind and emotions and onto the page (which you will be destroying).
Okay, let’s dive in!
To begin, invite to come to mind any past experiences that you’ve had in your business that didn’t feel good, either over the last while or since you started your business. Write everything that comes to mind, as much as you can, taking short breaks or even a couple days off if needed before coming back to it.
Please also invite in self-compassion and softness with yourself. This isn’t about beating yourself up, it’s about expressing out from you these past situations that hold emotion. If you experienced anything severe or traumatizing please do not do this process, instead get help from a therapist.
Here are some helpful prompts to help you think of things to write down, as you reflect on the past year (or since you started your business):
What didn't feel good? What sucked? What did not go well?Where did you feel disappointed?Where do you feel you "failed"?What do you still feel shame around? What did you have high hopes for that didn't work out as you thought? What do you regret? What do you wish you would have done differently? What did you do you wish you didn't?What was a waste of time/energy/money?What situations are you sick of?What traits of non-ideal clients are you done tolerating?
Take your time with this and feel free to come back and add to it or just do the process several times.
If you choose to burn this list, be sure you have a safe place to do this like a fire pit. If you don’t have a safe place to burn your list that’s totally fine, choose your method of destruction before you move on such as:
Ripping your sheet into tiny pieces then throwing it in the garbage or flushing it down the toilet. Shredding it with your shredder then immediately disposing of it and getting it out of your space. Whatever feels right to you.
Before you destroy you sheet, let’s go through this final step.
Before you burn/destroy your burn sheet, I recommend rereading the burn sheet to get in touch with what you're letting go of.
And then, state a powerful intention, prayer or declaration. Make up one that feels powerful to you, either in advance or on the spot. Here is an example of mine:
"I choose to release and free myself from these energies and situations. I let go and free myself to create a new reality for myself."
Then go ahead and burn or destroy your list.
Since I did this process just a week ago, new creativity has opened up, and a huge shift has happened in an important areas of the business I know wasn't possible before I did this.
Will this process solve all of your problems? No. But freeing up the energetic fog like this can be super powerful and allow you to feel freer and more available to the present where the magic really happens in your business.
I would love to hear how it goes! Please hit reply and let me know if you feel a shift or what you notice over time, I'd love to hear it!
And once again, please forward this email on to anyone you know has a ton of fog from the past that's getting in their way.
